Chapter Nine: "checkmate."

"The cold lights reflect off of the spotless white floor as his drooping body is dragged in. Snow looked through the one-way mirror as the Peacekeepers hauled the boy's limp body into the reclined chair. They each took one arm and tied it to the chair to prevent an escape which was unlikely. Last Snow had heard, the boy could barely walk. There was no chance he could escape now.

Upon seeing the boy's arms, riddled with bruises and scars usually concealed by pairings of silk and polyester, Snow almost felt bad for him. The naive fool. Really, he brought this upon himself. He should have never gotten mixed up with someone so hazardous. Never have let her get too close.

His eyes flick to the clock above the door. How much longer would this take? Snow hasn't bothered himself with observing experimental trials since before he was a gamemaker and he could tell that his patience for them was lost for longer than that. His gaze dropped to his trembling hands. He quickly hid them away in his pants before anyone could tell. 

If what his advisor said might happen, he doesn't want to miss it. There is something satisfying about seeing the demise of your enemy firsthand. Still, his mind is riddled with doubts that it still might not work. Maybe it will just leave the boy confused and scared. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. After this, the capitol will either successfully have a way out of this war, or they won't. And who does it hurt to try?"

“It should be on page four, I believe,” Armand says, and Louis glances back up at him, opening the pamphlet to the page as instructed only to be met with an advert for an opera: Nina osia la pazza d’amore. Louis’ gaze pulls across it until (his pulse, a flutter of a moth’s wings) he sees the unmistakable print of Lestat de Lioncourt dans le rôle de Lindoro.

“It was not well received, the opera at least,” Armand tells him. “Critics found it lacked both political and educational meaning – it was the French Revolution, after all, and still a few years from the end of the Enlightenment, and while theatre was vital to furthering the intellectual rigour of both, frivolous and sentimental works like this often invited scorn – although they admitted Lestat’s performance was not without its charm.”

There’s something to the way that Armand says it – a twist of snobbishness woven into his usually demure voice – that makes Louis smile. He glances up at the other man, eyebrow raised.

“Did you see it?”

To which Armand scoffs, waves out a hand as he places the other pamphlets onto the desk, sorting them into an order that seems to satisfy him.

“Not that one, no. I never saw him in the operas. I met him a year or so later when he was working in the melodramas. A better fit for him, I believe.”

“He certainly could be melodramatic,” Louis offers, glancing back down at the advert. He feels something low in him twist, (oh, the tender skin grown over the wound of Lestat is still too easily torn), the echo of a sound, an expression – one of Lestat’s sulks. A pointed and sullen silence at being accused of such dramatics. Always the performer.

Across the room, Armand grins, something a little sly to the turn of it.

“He could, but most actors are, in my experience. You are certainly seeing Santiago’s ah, affinity for the form of late.” That’s enough to make Louis snort before Armand continues. “Lestat performed at a number of the theatres along the Boulevard du Crime though, but particularly at the Gaîté – it would’ve been a treat to take you there. The architecture was quite remarkable, but they were mostly demolished during the rebuilding of Paris in 1862.”
